Sahitya Akademi

Sahitya Akademi is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, primarily responsible for promoting literary activities in India. The Academy was established on 15 December 1954 by a resolution of the Union Cabinet.

Sahitya Akademi has an Advisory Board for each language consisting of 10 eminent writers and scholars. The Advisory Boards in Sahitya Akademi play an important role in promoting and developing Indian literature in various languages. The Board is responsible for formulating and implementing specific programs in the language concerned.

A primary role of the Advisory Boards is to provide inputs to Sahitya Akademi on its literary programs and activities in the language concerned – suggesting new programs, reviewing existing programs, and providing feedback on the Akademi’s work. The Board helps to Identify and recommend writers and scholars for the Akademi’s various awards and fellowships.

The following are the members of the Advisory Board for Nepali language for the tenure of 5 years (2022 – 2027)

  1. Sri Premchandra Pradhan – Ladenla Road, Darjeeling
  2. Smt. Asha Mukhia Lama – Kurseong, Darjeeling
  3. Sri Durga Khatiwara – Maligaon, Assam
  4. Smt. Amrita Rana – Dalsinghpara, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal
  5. Sri G.S. Limbu (Subba) – Deputy Director, Information & Public Relations Department, Government of Sikkim
  6. Sri Subash Sotang – Kalimpong, West Bengal
  7. Prof. Tejman Baraily – Associate Professor, Dept of Nepali, Siliguri College, West Bengal
  8. Sri Ram Shah – Motinagar (Lumdiengsoh), Shillong, Meghalaya
  9. Sri Chandramani Upadhyaya – Tezpur, Assam
  10. Sri S.D. Dhakal – Gangtok, Sikkim

The Advisory Boards are an important link between the Sahitya Akademi and the literary community in each language. They help to ensure that the Akademi’s programs and activities are relevant and responsive to the needs of the writers and readers in the language concerned and also;

  • Suggest new literary programs and activities, such as workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Review existing programs and activities to make sure that they are effective and meeting the needs of the literary community.
  • Provide feedback on the Akademi’s publications to make sure that they are of high quality and meet the needs of the readers.
  • Identify and recommend writers and scholars for the Akademi’s various awards and fellowships.
  • Promote the Akademi’s publications and other literary activities in the language concerned by organizing events and outreach programs.
  • Network with other literary organizations and institutions to promote the exchange of ideas and best practices.

The language Advisory Boards play a vital role in helping the Sahitya Akademi to achieve its mission of promoting and developing Indian literature in various languages.
